Not Just Another Directory: Why We Developed the CI Company Directory

2 mins read

Throughout my discussions with top law firms, a common paint point emerged: a lack of reliable company intelligence. Firms found it difficult to routinely upkeep the quality of internal company records, maintain corporate hierarchies, capture current & reliable industry information, and track their firms’ relationships to any given company.

The common thread? Firms couldn’t procure the company insights they needed with the resources they had available, let alone tie them to their own people records and case histories. We recognized this as an opportunity to expand on what our company already does best: give firms clean, structured, and connected intelligence, right where they need it.

The CI Company Directory is a natural extension of the data pipeline we already built for the People Directory: a process that cleans, structures, connects, and enriches entity data—but customized to collect the key details firms want to see about companies rather than people.

The CI People Directory has evolved from exclusively profiling experts to becoming the most comprehensive legal professional directory, now including arbitrators, mediators, judges, and lawyers. Through trial-and-error and intensive customer partnership, we developed a robust data pipeline that captures current data, rectifies data issues, and tracks changes. The result are legal professional profiles containing trusted insights, all tagged with unique CI identifiers–regardless of current and past roles. Our Directory’s underlying data quality process has led to 40+ top law firms and insurance companies relying on our people insights.

After refining our people data pipeline for a decade, we were able to replicate the underlying ground work with the CI Company Directory within the past year. But we went beyond what other company databases did. Instead of just providing verified company data, we tapped into the power of connecting the dots between company, people, and matter data.

To unlock deeper, connected entity intelligence, we started by creating unique company records for each organization tied to the 4 million lawyers contained within our CI People Directory. Then, we embedded data analytics to automatically surface how each law firm’s lawyers are connected to each company’s in-house team. Lastly, we built an automated process to ensure the company data and connections were updated quickly and, most importantly, accurately.

But after finalizing the CI Company Directory, we wanted to ensure that firms had the ability to surface our data where they work, whether it’s an AI LLM, CRM, EMS, or some other technology system. Consequently, we built out this functionality with our CI Connectors, which takes firm’s internal company records, normalizes them against CI’s records, and pushes it into their system of choice.

Over the course of developing both the CI’s solutions, CI has continued to listen to the needs of the legal industry to ensure they have quality data, regardless of entity type. Now, company intelligence is a part of that picture.
